2004-08-04 - 2:23 p.m. It's A Landslide! I am staying away from IRC trivia long enough to write this. But it calls my name like a long lost lover. Rufus... Who won the 1964 Nobel Peace prize? Unscramble this word... Come back to us... Well, I guess the votes are all in. And what is the verdict on my face? Observe: It is a clear win for barefacedness. But I will wait one more day to actually shave it off, so that I can allow this single annoying blemish to completely fade. Next time you see me, my face will be naked. My only worry is that when I go to Seattle later this month, the customs people will distrust the change in my face from ID to reality. But the people have spoken! Bow before my sensical palindrome: Sadly, the following lines are verbatim quotes from people I worked with today: and “All those wrestlers are gay. Don't you think there is something weird about two men playing together in a ring?” Lesson for the day: everything you don't understand must be gay. Whew! Sure glad I found that out. I don't even have a joke about no-leg fetish man. Just a little disturbing. What did he mean by “imagine what you could do”? Do I really want to know? I must admit that I may be prejudiced against professional wrestlers. Though not because of whatever their sexual orientation might be. Breathe deeply. Allow the serene image to infiltrate your consciousness. Forget about the racists and misogynists of the world. (Serenity Now!) I watched the documentary “Spellbound” the other day. I thought this portrait of eight children who partake in the prestigious National Spelling Bee was just fantastic. The movie is really about these kids as individuals, each so different and yet so alike in their earnestness and intelligence and likability. All the same, it has you on the edge of your seat in the final rounds, despite the utter silliness of caring about how to spell impossible words. I recommend it for anybody who enjoys documentary films. Witness the queen as she emerges young and stony from this tree. This weekend, I go to Vancouver to see my first and only nephew for the first time. Exciting! I think I may buy my much-imagined new digital camera before then. The children of siblings are wonderful. You get all the joy of seeing a little person develop without any of the heartache of having to discipline them or witness their little worlds go through the usual tragedies. I can finally be cool Uncle Rufus. Maybe Unc' Monk? No, that's a little too Doc Ock. Uncle Rufus it is. |
